1962 don garlits runs 7.99 in the quarter. he also runs 185 mph, in a dragster. 1967 willie borsch runs 7.90 in a fuel altered, and can go 196.93 mph. dyno don nicholson using a 516 cube jon kaase motor in a mustang 2 goes 7.97 in the 1/4 using gas/carbs, match racing grumpy jenkins in 1978. what kind of track surface do you think these cars were using. not todays standard, FOR SURE, not even close!! what kind of tire technology did they posses? the beginning. somewhere on the planet earth a street legal car can do a 7 second 1/4 mile on the right piece of pavement near you!! and YES i mean the right surface public high way.
I doubt that will happen in the near future.,. cars run as fast as they doing now is better tires compounds for more adhesion and grip on the track surface, which has layer upon layer of rubber impregnated on it.That is why it's so important for fast cars to stay "in the groove", because once they stray out of it, control is lost.On the street, there is no groove and therefore, most hot cars seldom get all their power to the ground.,. instead they go up in smoke.
