i love how she gets down the highway, but i want more power from the starting blocks. help me out.

its in a 81 chevy caprice. ive play'd with the top end. as far as having the rocker arms replaced (stock) and the carberator (4 barrel QJ). is this my problem?

very heavy car,probably 2.54 or 2.73 gears.what about exhaust?
btw did you put this 400 in your car?chevy quit making 400s in 1980.
I'm not very auto savey so i realy couldnt give u any specs, but im very interested and eager to get her very hogtight. the pipes r straight back though. my cousin gave me the car a year ago, but it sat up in my grandmas yard for 7 years. just b4 he went upstate he had it dropped into the caprice. i believe it came out of a 79 pickup. i didnt realize what i had until i took it to the shop 2 have the rocker arms done, i thought it was a 350, but a mech showed me how 2 identify it by the heads. (i quickly found out that opening your hood is like letting someone look under ur girls skirt) he tried to steal it from me. so tell me something good, i dont mind gettin my hands dirty.
What do plan on doing with the car, is it just for the street? How much money are you willing to part with, and how much of the work do you think you would be capable of doing?
I just thought of this, the March issue has an article on the Engine masters Challenge winning 400 small block, called Common Sense Small Block. It makes about 673 HP, but might be a little over the top for you car, hahaha
i dont intend on racing it. i plan to have some custom work done to it as far as the guts and paint and rims and stuff but i want to realy feel the 4 when i open his throat u know what i mean. and money is not realy an issue i just want to do it right, with the motor i have. and i wont bs u im not a true gearhead but i did replace the tranny, myself! so if i can get so positive feedback i think i can make something happen 4 my baby. hit me and let me know whatsup
Sounds like you need a lower rear gear and a higher stall converter to get out of the hole better. After that, time to look at weight reduction.
like phill said,maybe 3.42 gear,2500 converter,then normal boltons.cam,intake,carb,headers,duals.btw you can not tell a 400 by the heads.sorry.
I'ed put roller rocker's in it for starters.
By the way do you have a blow proof bell housing?
