If you think gas prices are high now, you should have seen them in the Reagan era. Bruce Crower came up with an idea...14.5 compression, and a late closing intake grind to the cam to bleed off the compression. killed low RPM power, but not so much the problem higher up.
so, i'm thinking...get an LS1 or direct injection engine that only puts in fuel when that late intake starts to finally close, do the same mileage cam idea, stroke the engine to get the cubes up so it makes torque no matter what, get a tuned runner intake to keep the reversion out of the cylinder into the intake from occuring on a large scale...maybe even a blower to help out...
sure, there's better ways to make power and gas mileage these days, but just for brain exercise...what about it?

During the Reagan era we still had leaded gas, and some places still had Racing gas at the pumps. How about smaller cubic inch V8's and getting rid of a restrictive exhaust. That theory has been around for along time.
Smokey Yunick was working on a theory of smaller cubic inches. NASCAR always had a cubic inch limit,but never had a minimum for cubic inches Until they caught him.
Just my 2 cents, to get the ball rolling.

Do you mean, smaller inches like the 5.0 liter mustang? Long intake runners to keep the power band making torque from idle to 5000RPM, matched with almost a Duesenburg like trans, with overdrives and steep first gears to allow the lightweight car to have first gear punch, ecobomy and top end?
GM's TPI did a similar route, but I think the LT1 that followed went back to runners as short as a wet intake, right?
PHR did an article on low restriction exhaust, claiming 40hp on a V8 and with a pull so great, it was almost like turbocharging on a small scale...it drew enough exhaust gases out of the chamber to cause the chamber to fill more during the intake stroke.
considering aerodynamics today, a long track NASCAR racer doesn't need much engine to hit 200mph, and on a short track, gearing could help a small engine rev up off a corner. Is this what you are referring to, in Smokey's experiments with smaller engines?

Yeah 5.0 liter engine can get things done today. With proper gearing it can easily be done. There running the 358C.I. engine at 9,000 RPM+ and they live for 500 miles its that easy to do that with a 5 liter. In drag race engines you have a different senirio. Cubic Inches make a difference.
