The truck (86 chev silverado,305,edel 600cfm carb, new hei ignition) Ok so I decided to clean my carb with some non ethanol carb cleaner.I started and warmed up the truck and began spraying down in the bowl and pretty much where ever i could see tarnish. As soon as I started spraying, the engine would start to rev up by it itself!! Not a high rpm rev but loud enough to be concerned! Has anyone ever experienced this? Is this normal? I have heard that if your looking for a vac leak you could spray cleaner on the hoses, around lower carb (gasket area) etc. If the engine revs...bingo you have a leak! Heard I could use a propane torch (not lite) also. Any advice on what could be causing this would be gratefully appreciated! tks
87dakota welcome aboard:Yes it's very normal,if you look on the can I'll bet you'll find something that tells you it contains a flamable. The next time you do that,(this is my 45+years)as your spraying any carb cleaner in the intake system keep bringing the revs of the engine up and down so you blow that crap you just cleaned out of the combustion chamber and out the exhaust. This is just a little FYI...sometime a piece of carbon can break off and foul a spark plug. Then you will be questioning what caused the miss? Another thing remember do that in well ventilated area and don't have other vehicles around it. GM makes a VERY GOOD TOP END CLEANER, you can use it on any TBI, or Carb......Thanks BobPS The GM cleaner is called (Top End Cleaner).
Thanks very much Bob!I really appreciate the response! I will be picking up the "Top End Cleaner" asap!Have a great New Year!Chris
