I decided to purchase A 408 chevy engine from T&L in march 2008. Contacted them, discussed options and decided which would be best for my application. I sent in my deposit in early may 2008 and then had no correspondance with them until july 2008. I contacted them (talked to rob) to ask when engine would be completed and was told they were having trouble getting the AFR cylinder heads from their supplier and if I would accept ported Dart heads with the same flow rates they could get the engine out in "A COUPLE OF WEEKS".I agreed to this and again heard nothing. Called back in SEPTEMBER 2008 and was told "ENGINE WILL BE GOING ON THE DYNO WEDNESDAY (ROB AGAIN)AND SHOULD BE SHIPPED WITHIN 2 WEEKS". MANY MANY CALLS LATER started dealing with RAY. I told ray that it has been almost A YEAR since my deposit was sent in and would like to know when my engine would be completed and shipped? I was told "WE ARE VERY BUSY BUT I AGREE A YEAR IS A LITTLE EXCESSIVE I WILL TALK TO LLOYD (THE OWNER) AND GET BACK TO YOU". Two weeks pass no E-mail and no phone call. I call back and talk to ray and he tells me "I`m LOOKING AT IT RIGHT NOW IT`S BEEN DYNO`D AND SHOULD BE CRATED WITIN THE NEXT 7 DAYS" I told him great could he connect me with the billing department so I could get my payoff amount which he did so I could get it soon as possible. I sent final payment and one month later still no engine. E-mailed lloyd (THE OWNER) asking him when my engine would be shipped since I HAVE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF PARTS THAT WERE PURCHASED THAT ARE NOW OUT OF WARRANTY DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF TIME I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR MY ENGINE (A YEAR)AND ALL I WANT IS AN HONEST ANSWER. His E-mail reply was "UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE VERY BUSY AND WE ARE BETTER ENGINE BUILDERS THAN WE ARE BUSINESSMEN I WILL CONTACT ROB AND TRY TO GET IT SHIPPED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE". TWO WEEKS LATER: I call again (TALKED TO ROB) to only be told it has been dyno`d and is in final dress stage and should go out in a week. CALLED back FRIDAY May 29 2009 (NOW 13 MONTHS) talked to ROB and the story now is "TOP END IS BEING PUT ON IT NOW AND SHOULD BE GOING ON THE DYNO WEDNESDAY" EVERY TIME ITS A DIFFERENT STORY. ALL I WANT IS AN HONEST ANSWER IF THEY WOULD HAVE TOLD ME WHEN IT WAS ORDERED IT WOULD TAKE A YEAR I WOULD NOT HAVE EVEN CALLED THEM UNTIL THEN BUT ALL I GET IS A RUNAROUND AND LIES. Everytime I pickup a car magazine theres an article about how they went to T&L and had an engine built I WONDER IF MY ENGINE WAS GIVEN TO A MAGAZINE OR JUST PUT ON THE BACK BURNER AGAIN. SORRY ABOUT THE LENTH OF THIS STORY JUST VENTING. I GUESS I`LL EITHER HAVE TO WAIT,GO TO NORTH CAROLINA PERSONALLY OR HIRE A LAWYER.

I have not bothered to call them back, but will on monday the 29th. If they tell me once again it will be "on the dyno next week" I am going to tell them great I will be there to watch it as I am on vacation and will make the 10 hour plus drive to be there when they open that day. I am then going to E-mail lloyd to inform him that I will be there for the dyno session. If when I show up if there is not an engine ready for the dyno I am going to demand A refund, and go directly to the bank the check is from and cash it before I leave the state. I will update whatever the outcome.

Called on tuesday and was told there was A note that lloyd was to contact me, but he was not there at that time. I was then asked if they should go ahead and dyno the engine or I could come and watch it in person. I told them to go ahead and dyno it if I would get it faster or I would be willing to drive down and watch it in person. I was then asked if early or later in the week would be better. I replied tell me when it will be on the dyno and I would be there that morning. They told me they would talk to lloyd in the morning (WEDNESDAY) and contact me. Well the rest of the week passed and in true T&L fashion I have not been contacted. I will call again on monday. (NOW 14 MONTHS & COUNTING)
Hate to say it, but contact a lawyer. You're past the time of getting an honest answer, without a lawyer behind you to light a fire under them. Whether or not they are jerking you around, you will continue to get the same answer until you show you're serious.Unfortunately, just from reading the magazines between the lines, there are companies who put their paying customers on the back burner, to do a product for a magazine or for a celebrity, when they know free advertising will be the result of getting the job done by publishing deadlines.I watch engine blocks get bored out on Horsepower TV w/out a torque plate in sight, and its like, "WTF?". But its probably quicker and cheaper to do it for the cameras if they just drop in at their own convenience.

I called last week to check status again, I knew Lloyd would be off after their big show over the weekend. I was told that lloyd would call me, he didn't. called back later in week, Lloyd was ther but he was in the back, he told Rob to tell me they were expecting the webbers in later that week or 1st of next, this is after I was told it was going on dyno before memeorial day? Called today, Lloyd wasn't coming in but Rob will ahve him call me for sure tomorrow. I ordered this engine in April of 2008, they have my money? did you decide to drop in on them? I have been consideering spending the money for a flight to drop in again? I went to the shop before I ordered engine. I see lots of people upset on websiotes but yet the ones who do get the engines for the most part are happy with them?
I've been satisfied with the 408 they built for the Laguna, but I'm really unhappy to hear about all the problems from their customers and our readers. When we were having our engine built, I had to call several times to move things along, but in my experience, that isn't unique to T&L. In fact, those kind of complaints are fairly common about engine builders in general. What's not common is folks not getting their engines (or their money back). I can't imagine that all this negative publicity hasn't already wrecked T&L's business. I'm reading about it everywhere.
I understand what 69postcar and jaulby are saying and going through i ordered a 408 Stroker off T & L engine Development 15 months ago and am still yet to receive it. I had trouble getting answers off them when I finally get hold of them have been feeding me the same lines for at least 9 months with no progress being made. They’ve told me that quote “it’ll make steam on Friday” "It's going on the Dyno Wednesday" "just waiting on a part" They must have there excuses written out like a script because everyone i've spoken too who have had dealings with them like this say the same things. I’m in Australia therefore making it hard. I can’t help but think I’ve been done out of my money. After paying final payment in January 2009 and no correspondence of them since Feb 09 and still no motor i requested a refund from them and now 5 months later still haven't heard from them no refund no nothing. I've found this company is dishonest, unprofessional, definately not reliable. I am endevouring to find a attorney there to assist me if anyone can help with a name and contact details of 1 it would be greatly appreciated or i will somehow get the funds to fly there and deal with this.

Hey, 60postcar, did you get to watch the dyno? did you get your engine yet? I was told make my plane tickets get down here and it wioll be on the dyno, well after making my palns I get a call that they need to push it back a couple of days. I really want this engine,, but it is rerally getting rediculous.

I too am getting the runaround from T and L Engines. I ordered my engine (408 sbc) in Sept of 08 and put a deposit down and was told it would be 8-10 weeks. I made a change to the induction about 4 weeks in and figured I'd give them an additional four weeks. I continued to get the runaround similar to what you all are hearing. Things like the fuel injection system was bad and finally they could not get the motor to run with the Holley Stealth. Lloyd agreed to refund my money in April I think and I have been getting the runaround ever since. I have spoken to Holly, his daughter, and thought I was getting somewhere, but it appears she is in on the game as well. I have been in contact with a local police detective who has been working on a lot of our issues with T and L. His name is Patrick Horsch and his info is: Patrick C. Hi Wilde70,I am also an Australian with an identical problem to yourself with T & L. Made deposit on a custom 383 build in january 09(US$4700)nothing to date. No photos, No evidence at all. I have contacted Better Business Bureau and filed a complaint, but it seems that T & L are in much more trouble than that as they don't seem to be answering the phones at all.My next step is to call the Sherriff/Police mentioned in this post for assistance.
