I musta missed something...was this Fox body a 5.0? Why not start with a 4 banger, since the whole drivetrain's getting replaced?
Or for that matter, a V6 Thunderbird? Isn't there articles a-plenty on how to build a 5.0 Mustang...for that matter, ENTIRE MAGAZINES devoted to it?
Actually, that's why I don't know if PHR bought a V8 car just to replace everything they paid extra for...5.0's are done to death. Its boring. and its easier to just grab a T'bird, and discover what Mustang parts won't work, which helps the reader not to waste cash, than to re-invent the wheel entire magazines focus on....

and why is there a GM THM400 3 speed trans behind the Ford engine? Art Carr et al make AODs just as strong to handle this...and Ford Motorsport had a C6 program in I believe 1985 that had a 514 cid in a Mustang GT Fox body, so it fits and its strong enough. Personally I'd choose the overdrive, b/c gas still ain't cheap...and its cheaper than a Gear Vendors overdrive.

If you had read the stories, you'd have the answer to your questions. Dollar for dollar, an AOD is never going to be as strong as a Turbo 400. That's just a fact. The C6 is way bulkier, and has more parasitic loss than a Turbo 400, although not much more.
The engine for the project is a big-block Ford, not a 5.0. Like you said, maybe you missed something, I don't know.
You are right. 5.0s are done to death.
