With the recent interest in the 73-77 Chevelle, I've yet to find any posted with the maximum wheel size for the Chevelle.  I've read different articles with talk of 17 inch wheels, but wondered if someone has some experiences or thoughts?

The 73-77 Chevelles have the advantage of having large wheel wells both front and rear.  A lot depends on whether you lower the car or not.  A general rule of thumb is that a zero offset wheel of up to 10" wide will usually fit without rubbing in back. I have run a 15x10 rally wheel with 5" back spacing with both 275/60/15 and 295/50/15 tires with no interference.  Hunkins has lowered his car and is running 8" wheels with zero offset and 275/60/15's all the way around.  One of our European guys on Doc's 73-77 Chevelle forum on Chevytalk is running 295/50/15's all the way around.  A 275/60/15 tire is approximately 27" tall and that is roughly the height of the stock tires that came on the cars from the factory.  I have 16x8 wheels with 4.25" back spacing on my car now with 1" spacers.  I have 295/50/16 rear tires (27.8")and 265/50/16 front tires (26.4")tall and they fill the fenders nicely.  You can see my 76 Laguna in the Reader's Rides section.  A 285/40/17 tire would be approximately 26" tall if you used it on a 17x10 rim with zero offset.

I have the 275/60R15s all the way around. The fronts are a nice fit, but I will probably go to a 295 or a 315 tire in the rear. There's massive room to spare.

There's a guy in the readers rides section of the a-body site that has a 73 GTO that is running a 17x11 rear wheel with 315's on it.  It's the same basic frame and wheel well. I think you can do it as long as the offset is right, because these cars have monster wheel wells.

i have a 1974 chevy el camino and i have 18 x 12 rushforth fuel wheels with 6-3/8 backspacing and nitto 305/40r18 drag radials on the back and they don't touch, but i have'nt driven the car yet, and i am also prepared to do whatever mods are necessary to make them clear, whether it's frame or body, axle or all thre, but for now they are not touching any portion of the frame or body. on the front i have 18 x 8 rushforth fuel wheels with 4-1/2 back spacing and could have gone as wide as 10 inches. look on the rushforth wheels website and look at the gallery and look at the red chevelle  with rushforth wheels, 20s on the back, 19s on the front, looks real badass in a pro touring kind of way.
