Hi there,

I just rebuilt a 400 and put a accu drive gear drive and new cam and lifters. When I set the timing and try to start all  I get is a blow back throught the carb and no start. I have checked this thing over and over. I have reset to make sure i am not a 180 degrees out and nothing has fix it yet. need help.

had this problem myself once or twice

did the lifters bleed down before the valve adjustment was set again?
fire out the carb indicates spark while the intake valve is open

the blowback thru the carb, as the other poster said, is a sign the timing is off, b/c the intake valve is open and combustion is coming up the intake manifold and out the carb.

Perhaps the timing tape on the balancer is on the wrong spot?  180 degrees off is easy to do.  you may have to pull the head, make sure #1 piston is at TDC and then check the timing tape, to make sure things are on spec.  Or just stick a pointer thru the spark plug hole, but I like to see it w/ my own eyes.
