I'm building a 383 stroker engine, and I have a question. What would be an acceptable clearance between the rods. I have a set of eagle rods, but I don't know who made the crank. Right now I'm at about 18 to 20 thousands spread out among them all.  The crank had to be cut 10 and 10, I just hope they didn't mess it up. Some books are showing 6 to 10 thousands. Some people say 12 to 15 is okay . I would like to hear from you guys. The rods are right on the money.

i follow the factory specs whenever poosible

if that doesn't work, check with the rod and/or crank supplier

I ALWAYS GO WITH 8 TO 14..BUT THATS FOR STOCK RODS.

With steel rods you can run up to about .025" of side clearance without any problems so you are okay where you are at right now.  One thing to check whenever you have a crank re-ground is the radius on the rod journals to make sure your bearings are not causing any side clearance problems.  I have seen occasions where you might have to run a radiused bearing in your rods but usually only on cranks with a lot of radius in the throw.

It all depends on the type of driving your going to use the motor for. What you have now is ok for street and some racing engines. What type of oil do you use, are the rods modified, what clearance do the rods have for bearings. You should fill in the questions you left out of your post. Some racing engines i've built have up to .035- .040 clearance. You didn't say if you had H-beam or I-beam rod are used. Just remember the higher RPM, the more power you have things need to match. A little lose we always fly, but alittle tite will not.

The bearings are radiused ,and they have around .008 clearance. The rods are steel and are H-beams.  Sounds like I'm good to go. Thanks guys. I'll let you know how it turns out.

.008 clearance on the bearings that is way too much bearing clearance.

Let me recheck that number, .008 does seem to much. When I get the crank back I'll recheck that. What do you think about the side play?
