What is with the Nitto tires? Been going to Talladega for over 30 years and have never seen a set of Nitto tires on the track. Bob G. Pumpkin Center, NC

A set of yellow letter Goodyears would look very cool on this car.

I don't know what they run in downtown Pumpkin Center, NC, but I bet it's not race-only Goodyears. I chose the Nittos because they're about the same size as the old stock car tires, they're very sticky, and they're street-legal. Nitto also takes a very active role in our segment of the hobby. Goodyear, on the other hand, doesn't even know you and I exist.

project Talladega also doesn't have a fully gutted race interior, that doesn't make it any less bad ass!

Great Job Johnny! As a PHR subscriber, 1st GM owned a 73 Malibubu (which I loved), and current owner of 73 Grand Am, I was pleased to see your coverage of the NASCAR and other 73-77 A-Body GM's.
Perhaps all of you will enjoy this 1973 Grand Am link as well: www.tachrev.com/GrandAm1973-75.htm for Grand Am 1973-75 info
And this Team Associates 1973 Nascar Grand Am page: www.tachrev.com/GrandAm1973Nascar.htm
We greatly appreciated our 73 Grand Am used as a PHR Factoid feature in 2007: www.tachrev.com/Johengenspg5.htm#PHRLilly_Medjpg
Keep up the great work! LMKWUT

I agree with Johnny. I have Nitto's on my 75 TA. For a street tire they hook very good. They are less money than the MT's. I got caught in a very heavy downpour when I was going 55. The Nitto drag radials acted like a normal set of radial tires. My ET Street radials I would have been in a ditch.

I have been watching this project very closely. As its something I have wanted to do with my 68 camaro for some time now. The hole NASCAR/Trans Am look really appeals to me and I'm glad you did it. I got alot of useful info out of it. I am definatly ordering a set of Goodyear eagle vinyls from Heath Elmer of Arizona Auto Trim. I saw a teaser picture of you cornering with the laguna on page 16 of the March issue. I have been waiting with baited breath for every following issue hopeing that you do the suspension and do some handeling testing so I can see if getting Nitto 555R drag radials on the front is something I would wanna do. I intend to auto cross and do some bigger track runs on Hallet raceway as well as make some drag strip passes and drive it on the street.
My question is will the Nitto 555R Extreme drag radial corner or is having them on the front just for looks? I am running 15" wheels and finding sticky tires for them is hard for me. And getting bigger rims is out of the question looks wise for me.
Anyhow if you could set my mind at ease, great. If not I guess I will have to wait for the suspension upgrade issue. As long as I get it before June which is when I get leave and will be buying rims/tires.

I seem to like the NASCAR-branded Goodyear Eagles on my Laguna, wet or dry, thank you. also very easy to change the white letters to yellow
