I have a 1989 firebird. The engine code is E. What size is it and are there any special info I need to know before I start on trying to upgrade it?

Thanks. Is this a viable engine to upgrade? I would like to keep it close to stock.

According to HotRodMagazine in the day these were new, they said the oil pump wasn't up to snuff, in order to get slightly better gas mileage. An old LT1 oil pump spring may be enough.
The 305 will take many parts destined for its 350 big brother...but the smaller cylinder bore of the 305 (same stroke, but its debatable if the cranks will interchange due to balance issues) will restrict performace. in other words, the money is better spent on the 350, which will bolt right in.
TBI is a pain in the butt. Tuned Port Injection works better...but you could look around for a newer LS1 engine to replace everything with. you'll need the computer, trans, correct oilpan, etc.
But if you just want some extra umph on that 305...look into exhaust system upgrades. I think the gear ratio wasn't all that bad, considering the RPM range the engine was designed to work in. I don't remember what they had for a cam, I know the Monte SS was running a Corvette cam during that period...maybe just a swap to 1.6 roller rocker arms will be enough.
