The first hotrod, could have been Henry Ford's 999. google it for info.
Most of the first "gow jobs" or "soup up jobs", were Model T Fords. Chevies had wooden body structures that rotted out, and their Stovebolt Six engines had babbit bearings that burned out at high engine speeds. That's why many cop cars were Fords during the 1920's, and the bank heist era of the Great Depression.
One nickname for early hot rods, were "hop ups", named after a term for race horses hopped up on cocaine to run faster.
Hotrods typically run on gasoline.
Hot rods were typically cheaply bought cars, that either had unnecessary bodywork removed to be lighter, or had the engines hopped up with parts from Ed Winfield, Ed Iskedendrian, Clay Smith, Vic Edelbrock, etc. Or, both could be done. They were raced on deserted streets (such as the "main drag", the main dirt road that was dragged regularly to fill in potholes and not twist the legs of horses that would get replaced by cars) or they were raced on airfields abandoned after WWII for coastal defense.
Is that enough information for your paper?
