If you dont know what article im talking about it can be found right here:

In it they said "Had it been a higher compression roller block"
,we definitely would have gone with a more aggressive hydraulic roller camshaft."

But most roller 305 engines iv seen are only 9.3:1 CR so what do they mean by higher compression inless they swaped in some early LG4 pistons which would net them in he 9.5:1 range. now with this is mind being that if it was a factory roller camshaft 9.3:1 CR engine what cam do you think they would have gone with?. i would be intrested in seeing what they would have picked. . .

Most not all roller 305's that I have seen came with flat top piston instead of dish tops.
The 305 they used only had 8.5:1Cr.

to bring the "good ol' days" viewpoint to this...

After Sunoco Blue 260 disappeared, and leaded gas w/ it, one way to keep your hi compression (11:1 and higher) engine from detonating, was to stick in a cam w/ even more overlap (many musclecar cams were rated at say 300 degrees, but it wasn't measured from .05" lift, so it probably was more like 270 or so).  It would bleed off the mechanical compression at lower RPM's.

I suppose, tho, you will be willing to use higher octane fuel in this 305, if detonation is an issue?  If so...jumping up to a 350 could be a better investment.

I have a 1988 Formula Firebird with a TBI, roller cam LO3 305. The LO3 305 is rated at 170 horsepower, has a 9.3 compression ratio, and 58cc combustion chambers in the heads. After reading this story, I pulled the heads off my 305 to check the pistons. Guess What? My 305 has the same exact pistons (dished top with four valve reliefs) as the lo-po 305 in the Hate Me article. Does anyone out there know how Chevy theoretically raised the compression ratios on 305's from 8.4 to 9.3 using the same piston?

Well, I just read that early 305's had 64cc combustion chambers with a 1.72 intake valve.I hope that is right, I don't have a lot of faith in what I read on these forums, but it makes sense!
