I am trying to duplicate this build and have some questions on some stuff that I am unsure of. First what does it mean when you say that you installed the comp springs at 1.750 inches? Second after milling the heads did you have to shim the rocker shaft assembly if so how much? Third after you mill the heads did you take any material off the intake side of the heads or the intake itself or was it still a bolt on deal. Thanks Kyle.

I also have a question about that 318 build. You said that it could be built on a working mans budget but everyone's idea of a working mans budget is a little different. So how much did it cost to build ?

Technically, there are 3 318's...the early Poly's, the LA, and the Magnum-headed ones. Poly318's are the only V8's that can't take HotHeads early Hemi heads, but other V8's of the 50's will accept those heads, from what I was told by the company.
The LA's are small bore 340's, so if you found early year 360 heads and a PurpleShaft cam...you're sorta done with the rebuild. But the, I think its 1986 cop car heads, do a better job than slapping large chamber 360 heads onto a smaller bore. So as far as cost is concerned...which are cheaper for you to find? Magnums oil differently, so you'd need to change a few things.
Dyno tests show that the difference between a well-tuned carb and a $2000 universal EFI setup is about...20hp. Of course, if you tune to each design (ie, wet versus dry manifold) ability, then you see differences. And the Magnum heads sure help things along, too.
