I need the help of someone who has installed a IFS unit in a 49-54 Chevy, there are so many it's a little confusing, the Jim Myers Racing looks nice just bolt it in with to small welds, a little high on price but alot less work Fatman's looks to have a decent one along with Hiedts. I would also like your opinion on manual or power rack and pinion, are the 49-54 a little to heavy to go manual. Thanks in advance Gene

I haven't had experience in pre-shoebox Chevies, but I suspect a manual steering box's "performance" will depend upon the weight of the engine over it (ie, are you running a small block with aluminum heads, etc?), the width of tires that box needs to turn, and perhaps the size of the steering wheel can help overcome the labor necessary....and, perhaps, you can look into "necker" knobs, too. Back in the day, they were the rotating knob you clamped to the steering wheel rim, so you could keep one arm around your sweetie while still turning the wheel with your left hand. Also the reason to swap your "three on the tree" shifter to the left side of the steering column, but I digress.
Go to a big national car show, where you can ask owners what they have, and how they like it. Get a book on suspension, so you'll know what scrub angle is, etc. Unfortunately, you can't always trust a big company--especially one handling something rare, they can be small and yet be the biggest fish in a small pond--to know what they should know about making a safe product, you have to look at it with your own eyes and ask the right questions.
