i know i'm probably gonna catch my share of flak for this engine swap but i'm doin it anyway. i have a 1972 datsun 240z , i have the kit for the engine swap and i would like to swap in a 305 . i would like to get 250-300 horsepower out of this thing . . . . for as little money as possible . i also really wanna avoid fuel injection because of my lack of automotive knowledge . i have no idea what year or model of car would be best to pull this engine from but i'd really appreciate any help anyone could give me .

I would look for somthing in the 80-85 range what you should do is to pull the valve covers off and look for the head casting numbers you will want the 14014416 prefferably or 14022601 they are the ho heads with 58cc cubustion chambers.I used both heads with good results with proper cam, carb, c.r., headers, porting, and tuning you should not have a problem reaching your goal maybe more.

On the back of the block were the transmission bolts to it will have a 5.0LG witch means it is a 305 a 5.7LG is a 350 and so on.They came in the trans am,firebird, and camaro but I would still pull the valve covers and look for the casting # I mentioned.

(yeah, I know this is an old post )

V8 in a 240Z?  You'll love the results.  Mine is 2800lb w/o driver.  Desktop dyno says the 406 puts out over 500hp/500lbft.  Make sure to visit HybridZ.org to do your research on the swap, as well as jagsthatrun.com.  My site (http://AlteredZ.com) has some pointers too.

I'd go for a 383 or 400 myself.  The weight is the same, the power and torque are higher .

No flak here! I just wrote up an Under Construction feature on a Z car. I love Datsuns... don't tell my boss...

Will we be seeing this feature soon?

Again go with a 350 or better they should be the same price as a 305 with alot more torque. I have a modified 383 with Dart 215 Iron Eagle heads and it pulls until you let off the accelerator.

Admittedly, I'd like to see someone turbo the 2.5 I6 or go w/ a VG30 V6, they came w/ girdles and could handle 600hp easy.  But, for a 305 (hopefully get the vortec?), there are kits for this--there was even the Scarab, back in the 70's dropping miller turbo 350's in for 425hp.  Don't know if there are kits for the Cadillac aluminum V8's, but the OP didn't want EFI.

Are you going with an auto trans?  That IRS was iffy, if the rear tires were sticky.
