I just got a 1971 pontiac ventura 2. It is in great condition and it has a pretty much stock. I havent seen many of them around and I love having something different than a 350 nova. I really wanna do a little something to it but dont know were to start... Im only 20 years oldand dont really know were to go with it.My dad DID rebuild cars in the 70's but so much has changed! I Do know a little something like I cant expect to much out of the small CI and thats fine. I put a new carb a 500cfm 2bb carb set of cheap headers and dual flows. It sounds nice and gets me around But i wanna put a new cam, intake, carb, and maybe heads i have some one with some 194 heads that he was would go great with it if its bored. SO tell me what you think I should do and some exact set ups that would work for such a small CI engine.

Pontiac never made a 307 engine if it is a 307 for sure then it is a oldsmobile engine and not original to the car.

In 1971 it IS a 307 Chevrolet engine not a 305 ... it has a 3.875" bore and 3.250" stroke. Later model Chevy truck "Vortec" heads with an aftermarket 2 plane, 4 barrel manifold to match those heads will add quite a punch to that engine for not much money.

Pontiac only made a 301--don't waste the time--Olds did a 307 that was a small bore Olds 350 (can make about 300hp), and Chevy had a 307. Its a small bore 327. But before you shove in an L79 style cam, consider trying to flow air into the smaller bore. Use later model Vortec heads, designed for trucks to get their 305 small bore up to speed. then, go ahead and treat it like a 2 bolt cast crank 327. maybe a 300hp 327 style cam, or an L-79 style with variable duration lifters in place, generic headers, a dual plane intake of choice, a 4 bbl and an HEI set up with a good ignition curve (the Vortecs don't need a whole lotta lead) an a big air filter that is enclosed to a scoop getting cold air from outside the engine.

yea the 307 came in the cheaper 68'69 chevelle and in 70 olds i'm a pontiac freak and I own a 74 grand prix with a 455. To be honest with you aint much you can do with a 307 not a good hot roding motor but if its all you got you can look online at competition products and they might have parts for it.But if you got the money my cousin gots a 400 out of a 76 trans am its just a block, rods, and flat top pistons, crankshaft but it would be better and easy to build horse power and in a ventura it would drop right in.

Your Ventura was one of the first cars to receive what is now known as "corporate motors". I have seen Venturas with 350 Pontiac motors, Chevy 307s, and 250 in-line six cylinders. GM started stuffing small blocks into non-Chevys before using Oldsmobile engines. Heck, the Olds 307 wasn't even available until around 1978. The most widely known corporate engine swap is probably the 78-79 Pontiac Trans Am. To meet stricter California emission laws, Pontiac installed Oldsmobile 403 engines in all California bound TAs for those years. You could also get a 305 Chevy in late '79 and '80-'81 TAs!
If you want to keep your car mostly original, stick with the 307. It is basically a 283 block with a 327 crank. I had a '69 Chevelle with a 307 and it hauled that heavy car around pretty good. I had mine bored .030 over with flat top pistons and I had the rotating assembly balanced, Crane blue print cam (327, 350HP cam), early 327 camel back heads with 194 intake valves and 58cc chambers. They were port matched to a Holley dual plane high rise intake. Nobody believed it was a 307. Street racing was fairly common back then and everybody thought you were trying to hide something. It didn't help that I beat more then a few small block equipped cars.
Have fun with your Ventura.
