Why is everyone turning to crate motors? They dont produce big power as usually advertised. I spoke with a guy from a local machine shop(The Chevy Shop)yesterday and he was telling me alot of people are turning to crate motors.and its hurting machine shops that specialize in high performance equiptment. with crate motors all they have to do is install them. But if you really think about it, all their doing is punching it out .030 over and installing a $470.00 kit, and selling them as shortblocks for $3000 you are'nt very smart if you do this!
I could sell them all day long for $2250 and make a killing, but i would be a shark like the rest of the people that are killing the sport/hobby we love so much just to make a profit! dont make a mistake like this besides where is the fun in a crate motor?

Because people don't want to wait for an engine to be built. They want to drop the motor in their car, turn the key, and go cruising.

Not saying it's a great thing, just the reasoning behind it.

I would say if all you intend to purchase for a crate is the short block, then you have a very valid point.  By building your own, you control the parts and know how well balanced it is.
On the other hand if you have more money than time and want a turnkey crate engine, with a dyno chart and warranty, it can be a good way to go.
