I've always loved cars, but for the first time I've finally managed to get my hands on a car that I feel is worth putting money into. A 1967 Acapulco Blue 289 Coupe.  I have a list of things I'd like to do to the car, and while it's already been modified slightly by the previous owners, it still looks stock, even if it doesn't drive stock. I guess my question is what's the best way and order to go about accomplishing the things on my list, and is there anything not on the list that should be?

1. Change the 4 wheel drums to front disks with power assist. (New wheels?)
2. Install shoulder belts
3. Install bucket seats
4. Replace the steering column with a later model one that's collapsible.
5. Rebuild/replace the engine (turbo?)
6. Convert from automatic to manual transmission.
7. Redo the interior
8. Fiberglass hood, trunk, possibly other body panels.
9. Replace the glass with a lightweight alternative

It looks like from some of the things on the list you are a little concerned with the safety of the car, I would get that stuff handled first if you are concerned. If the Drum brakes make you uneasy I would also put that early on the list. I would also say drive it for a while before you decide to tear apart the engine and trans. I mean you bought it to drive right? The rest I would say do as you feel necessary.

Oh and congratulations on the car, and I would follow along with PHR as Liz Miles builds her '66 Street fighter 'stang for some good ideas.

I like many of the things on your wish list, and as Mr. Kimball has said, get the disc brakes and suspension handled first. I opted for the Global West suspension and steering mods on my 65 Mustang, which were done before any engine upgrade. I also agree about driving it for a while before you decide to tear it apart. You can get the engine and transmission purchases and accumulate a number of pieces over time. I did similar things as you listed with my little 'stang -- check it out here (with text) at Reader's Rides ...
