I just purchased a 1993 ford cobra 5.0  short block with very low mileage the problem is it has no camshaft it was a roller setup but thease parts are gone.the previus owner pulled it out and removed most of the parts to go on a new stroker short block what i do have is a 1983 302 solid lifter cam thats new in the box. my question is can i use this cam in the roller block without problems. if so what might they be thanks johnrodz

The cam will work, it's the lifters that could be a problem. See, roller blocks had taller lifter bores to handle the factory roller lifters, which were much taller than flat tappet ones, and if the solid cam you've got is even a roller.

If it is, then you can go to Comp Cams and get a set of solid roller lifters for your block. I'd recommend spending the extra money and getting tie-bar style lifters and not using the factory style ones with the spider (which I don't think they make in solid lifter version anyway).

but if this car is gonna be on the street regularly, I'd suggest going with a good hydraulic roller cam for better streetability.

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU PURCHASED A VERY SHORT BLOCK. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU PLAN TO DO WITH IT BUT THE CAM IS ONLY THE BEGINING OF A LONG ROAD OF DECISIONS YOU NEED TO MAKE TO GET TO A RUNNING ENGINE. CAMSHAFTS ARE ABOUT THE CHEAPEST PART YOU WILL BUY FOR AN ENGINE AND THE MAINTAINENCE REQUIREMENTS OF A FLAT TAPPET CAM IN A REGULARLY DRIVEN CAR ARE JUST NOT WORTH THE EFFORT. THERE A LOT OF NICE ROLLER CAMS AVAILABLE FOR THE 302 THAT WILL PROBABILY MAKE YOU A LOT HAPPIER THAN WHAT YOU HAVE. BY THE WAY, WHAT ABOUT LIFTERS, TIMING SET, PUSH RODS? HOW ABOUT HEADS AND EVERYTHING ELSE NEEDED TO COMPLETE YOUR ENGINE ? I COULD GIVE YOU A LIST OF PARTS FOR A NICE ENGINE IF YOU ARE INTERESTED. I AM NOT TRYING TO RAIN ON YOUR PARADE JUST POINTING OUT THE SCOPE OF THE WHOLE PROJECT.

I would be interested in your list of parts.I do have my own idea of the engine i want but lets see what you would do. also i do not understand the old thearey that a solid lifter set up is troubelsum as all seam to belive .  I have used solid lifter set ups all my life as a engine builder and do not find them a problem if they are broken in properly. thanks johnrodz
