At 442.com they say there was a article sometime in 1987, dosent say which month. Says its oldsmobile 403 build up article on page 20 in 1987. I would like to read this if anybody has it.

Someone here, quoted a 425 crank will create 480cid, with the 403's big bores (if anyone knows the specs, the formula for figuring out displacement is bore times bore times number of cylinders times stroke times .7854).
Like a 350, the 403 will take big block heads, like Edelbrock's...would make a lightweight powerhouse, for sure. But the main webs on most 403's are window'd, rather than solid, to reduce car weight. I think Mondello has a web girdle for the 403...there was a demand for parts back when 403's were found in Trans Ams, but the engine has unfortunately fallen by the wayside since.
Too bad...there's potential.

The combo was a 425 crank into a 350 Olds diesel block. I got to talk with the guy (lost my notes, can't remember his name) that was the first person to get suckered into trying it. The cylinder walls didn't go down far enough, and rings were exposed when the piston was at BDC. The combo needed a long rod, high pin placement and a thin ring package. Lots of work and expense, little actual benefit.

well shoot, the biggest displacement those diesel blocks got w/ the 425 crank was 454 cid with block filler cement, and 425-440 was more ballpark. "480 cid" ain't even close.
When the stock 6 inch rod ain't enough...that tells you something
