with the price of gas at 4 bucks a gallon... a clean chevette looks good...
does it have the feed back varajet carb???? if so... a tiny amount of tinkering with the carb jetting might get you a much cheeper increase in 4 banger power.... they call it a varajet for a reason... there is a screen on top held down with tiny torx screws... the main jet is accessed through that with a proper double D shapped tool... same as the lean limit tool for Q jets..
with a dwell meter on the green connector next to the carb and set to 6 cylinder mode.. use something to lock the throttle at 2500 rpms and ajust for 28 to 35 degrees of dwell... i know that this is not what you ask for... but a tiny ajustment in those systems really helps the power output..
and if you do decide to swap out the motor... to get the starter out on a chevette.. the lower steering shaft is in the way... it unbolts from the rag joint and gets pushed into itself like a car antenna... other way you will have to drop the column... way too much work for just a starter extraction...
people have shoved in 500 cad motors into chevettes... so anything is possible...

im not to sure what kind of carb it has but ill look. if it has the varajet then ill try that out. and see what it does. i would like to have more power but gas milage is more important. the stock motor does run very good. it dont smoke or use any fluids. but i know that the carb does need to be rebuilt. ill tell you as soon as i find out which carb it has. and thanks for the info on the starter. i can just imagine driving around in a big block chevette. i mean wow thats a lot of motor. lol
