If he pulled off the heads, he'd know its a 400 cid b/c the head gaskets need to have steam holes drilled in.  So if you ever get new gaskets...they HAVE to have steam holes drilled in, or you WILL overheat.

Like the others said, get a rear axle in there with no more numerically higher gear than 3.5:1.  The engine is a torquer in stock form, so a free flowing exhaust, 4 bbl intake, and you're done...for now.
