Hey everyone, Got a question. I have a 77 Monte, all factory at the moment but I have some money to throw arround. Looking to see if anyone has some info for this beast. Trying to find a good cam, I want to go with comp, non hydr. but dont know what I should get for low end torq to Mid 2200 RMP. The hard part is compression in a 305. and finding a good set up withouth to much loap or to snorty for a street car as this thing is over 3,000 LBS of detroit steel.
Anyone have any ideads?
Thanks
Nick from MN

I would recomend somthing around .454 lift like part number #cca-12-210-2 witch was a duration of 218 degrees@ .050. with 58cc heads and flat top pistons you should be up around 9:1 c.r. and with a good intake that should make a decent combo.

With that motor, and you want bottom end torque, a solid lifter cam is useless. You need a good hydraulic lifter cam, 114 lobe sep that'll make a ton of vacuum and bottom end torque.
Comp has several cams that are 305 specific that'll work best for your motor. The other thing is, you'll need to plan on new springs, valve seals, and pushrods for your motor.
If you have the money, and feel like swapping the heads, I'd suggest scouring the junkyards for a '96-'98 full size truck with a 305, and swipe the Vortec heads off it. You'll need a new intake, but that's not a problem, Edelbrock and other companies have them out there for cheap. These heads have better flow than the ones you've got, and I think a smaller combustion chamber so they'll boost your compression up some.
