I have recently aquired a freshly built 350 from my father. The engine has been completely overhauled. All new bearings, seals, pistons, ect. I want to put this in my 89 chevy swb pickup. It currently has a 4.3 tbi with a 400 trans. I want to make about 350hp with this engine on a budget of $3,000.
I guess my question is first off is this possible on this small budget. What combination of cam, carb, intake ect do i need to make this work. I have a set of double hump heads from a '66 impala 327 that i could use if that would help. Would i need a stall? Vacuum booster?
This truck is my main driver even though i only drive it a few days of the week due to car pooling. Is there anything special i have to do to the computer to make this carb engine work with my factory fuel pump and instruments and things of that sort? What about motor mounts?
My main goal is to make some decent power and have a radical sound when i mash on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have the 3000 to spend on the motor? Should be no problem making that kind of power with that much to spend.

You should be able to get there for $3,000 easy. Those double-hump heads won't work if the core you bought is a late-model Vortec (you didn't say what year 350 it was).
If the converter you have is for the smaller 4.3L, then it will flash nicely for you behind the beefed 350. If it breaks, you can replace it then.
1 hp per cubic inch is no problem. I recommend an airgap manifold from Edelbrock, Weiand, or Professional Products. They're all about the same price and work great. Couple that with a good Holley or BG 650 carb, a cam swap, and you're there.
If your 350 is a late-model roller, plan on coughing up a little more for the cam. Need to know if it's a roller motor or not though.

The 350 is from a early 80's chevy truck. I will run the cast and get the exact info on that next time i am by my dads place. It is a complete engine with all new internals..he says its all factory spec parts as far as the cam, bearings, pistons and all that jazz.
With the budget i have proposed, do you think it is possible to reach 400hp? I mean i still wanna keep it practical to drive a couple days of the week. Im not sure what size the converter is. I just know that it has a 400 trans.
Does anyone know what i would have to do to make this carb. engine compatible with my electronics? You know like the fuel pump and instrument cluster and things of that sort.
