INCREASING MPG can anyone help me with their opinions on getting better milage from my 1963 283,2-barrel stocker? i plan on installing duel exhausts and headers(but do not know what pipe size),and a 700 od. trans. would a different carb and manifold help? does some one know of a book, or article with a specific parts list? i do not mind getting into the engine, but need to know what to use............thanks

hey howareya?, if your keeping this a stocker then headers with the same pipe size as stock will do as you are going duals.the 700 is a great choice i put one in my hotrod and mileage went up also you'll notice a nice kick in the pants at take off, since the 700 has the lowest first gear of the gm autos(3.06 to 1).as far as a new manifold and carb,if you want more mpg you could put a edelbrock performer or airgap manifold and a quadrajet type carb with smaller primeries. remember keep it in tune, check tire pressure regularly, and put it on a diet to get even better mpg.

My interest is in geting better MPG's. Here are some sources; David Vizard has written many books for you to gleen from. Here are two suggestions, an older book called "Performance with Economy" and a more recent book called "How to Build Max Performance Chevy Small Blocks on a Budget" Many performance techniques will also gain you mpg's. Check out Somender Singh and his grooves at http://www.somender-singh.com/ and the interest groups supercarbs and bettermpg2 at yahoo. Lots of suggestions and discussion.
