In the January 2007 issue feature of Kevin McAnnally's '68 Mustang coupe, it says he's running 18x8 Ford FR500 wheels with 5.42"backspacing, but Ford only sells those wheels in 18x9 with 5.98" backspacing. I would love those wheels for my '68, but don't know where he got them. What's the deal? Are they custom?

I asked Kevin how he did it and here's what he had to say... Hope this helps.
------
The rear wheels are 18x9 with +24mm offset which correlates to 5.95” backspacing. This backspacing tucks the wheel in as much as possible so that I can run the low ride height.
The fronts started life as 18x9’s with a +36mm (6.42” backspacing) offset wheels for the new 2005+ Mustangs. I had these narrowed 1” by www.weldcraftwheels.com so they are now 18x8 with 5.42” backspacing. Without any spacer this tucked the front wheels nicely but they rubbed the Global West upper control arms at full lock. A ¼” spacer gave me the additional room I needed to fix this.
I also had to remove the lip in the front wheels that is used to retain the center cap because it interfered with the Baer aluminum front hubs preventing the wheel from going all the way on. To hold the center cap I had special adapters made and welded to the dust cap to retain the cap.
